The Crash-Course Mental Health CMTE Series

Teen Mental Health, Building Relationship, & Trauma-Informed Music Therapy (4-Hour CMTE)

How impactful is building authentic relationships and utilizing trauma-informed approaches within music therapy in the recovery and healing of teens in mental health settings? Incredibly! Is it easy with the expansiveness of needs, acuity, expectations, receptiveness, and approaches? No. This comprehensive 4-hour CMTE explores the way music supports teens’ developmental stage, relationship building strategies, novel trauma-informed music application frameworks, practical music interventions, and group experiential workshop/brainstorming opportunities to better meet the immediate needs of teens in mental health settings for successful music therapy sessions. Whether you are a music therapy student, new professional, shifting to the mental health population, or needing some new ideas through a trauma-informed framework, this CMTE can provide something meaningful for all types of professionals.

Client-Preferred Music Applications through Trauma-Informed Frameworks in Mental Health Settings

Music therapists working in mental health settings often express uncertainty about choosing the most accessible therapeutic music experiences for clients when there are differing needs across of the levels of care. This 2-credit asynchronous CMTE helps support music therapists in determining best-practice music applications through exploring mental health levels of care, stages of change, trauma-informed music frameworks, practical music experiences, and additional therapeutic considerations. This CMTE will be asynchronous.

Group Counseling Facilitation Skills in Music Therapy (3-hour CMTE)

During this 3-hour CMTE, participants will engage in skill-enhancing, drawing inspiration from Yalom's Twelve Therapeutic Factors, to improve their counseling skills and facilitation techniques within music therapy groups.  Through interactive discussions and experiential learning, attendees will explore how to integrate these factors into their practice, leveraging the power of music to foster connection, expression, and healing within group dynamics. By building these skills, therapists can create supportive environments where individuals feel empowered to explore their emotions, strengthen interpersonal relationships, and embark on transformative journeys towards healing and self-discovery. Participants must be Board Certified Music Therapists. Maximum of 12 participants.

Supporting Suicidal Clients Through Understanding, Music, and Safety (2-hour CMTE)

Suicide. It can feel like a taboo topic within our culture and society. So how are we, as music therapists, helping address the concerning rise in documented deaths by suicide? Responding to this theme in a music therapy session can feel like a daunting task that brings up significant uncertainty, anxiety, and avoidance. Demystifying suicide, exploring theoretical frameworks, understanding the current trends, identifying methods of broaching the topic, discovering clinical music applications, and acknowledging overarching cultural considerations will be offered during this CMTE. Attendees are warned of potentially triggering content related to suicide and are encouraged to participate at their own discretion.

Social Justice & Multicultural-Oriented CMTE Series

Integrating a Relational-Cultural Theory Framework Into Music Therapy Practice (2-hour CMTE)

During this 2-hour CMTE, discover the transformative power of Relational Cultural Theory (RCT) in music therapy practice. We will be delving into the core principles of RCT, emphasizing the profound impact of authentic relationships, social justice, and cultural influences on therapeutic outcomes. Explore how RCT enriches music therapy by fostering shared empowerment between therapist and client while navigating the dynamic interplay between relationships, culture, and music. Professional music therapists and students/interns are encouraged to sign up. Maximum of 20 participants. *This CMTE counts towards 2 ethics credits*
